In October of 2009, Yahoo! shut down Geocities, a personal homepage site that it
purchased ten years earlier for billions of dollars. In doing so, they removed
hundreds of thousands of websites, some dating back decades, created by users who
had come online for the first time. Upon the announcement of the shutdown in
early 2009, many people and collectives worked to save off as much of Geocities as
they could, resulting in over a terabyte of saved data. Some of that collection
is on this site, Geociti.es.
Please browse the
neighborhoods collection to
see some of the thematic website collections that once lived and breathed on
Geocities, as well as our history section, which recounts the Geocities tale.
This site is still being backloaded with data, but many of the neighborhoods
are now browsable. Stay tuned for more improvements.
