We like to recall
The good old days
When life was different
In so many ways.
A relationship meant
We got married first,
Then faced life together
Through the best and worst.
Software kept us warm
On a cold, winter night,
And chips kept the fire
In the stove burning bright.
When fever set in,
We had few doctors bills,
For salves or home remedies
Cured most of our ills.
Earrings were clip-ons
And worn by the girls;
And they, not the boys,
wore their hair in long curls.
The boys wore the pants,
And the girls wore the laces;
You could tell which was which
Without seeing their faces.
Diapers were cloth
And were rinsed on the spot,
Not disposed of in cans
Or on some parking lot.
Would I want to go back
And live in the past?
I pondered the question
And thought hard and fast.
Nostalgia is nice,
But I'll have to admit
Surrendering some things
Would hurt me a bit.
Cruise control on the road
Makes driving a dream,
And power steering and I
Are a great little team.
I prefer air conditioning
To fans with the pleats,
And my freezer beats cellars
For storing my eats.
My dryer is handy,
My washer a must--
So I'll just take the present
And try to adjust.
